Kumamoto Prefecture lies in the heart of Kyushu. Formerly known as “Higo”, it is home to one of the world’s largest active volcanos, Mt. Aso. The prefecture has a little bit of everything: bullet-train (Shikansen), Kumamon, Mt. Aso, horse meat (basashi), Kumamoto Castle, and many other icons and places to see.
Mt. Aso

Mt. Aso is prone to frequent eruptions. There are no massive eruptions as of lately; however, when it is very active, visitors are not allowed to view the caldera from the rim. It is always best to check the restrictions: http://www.aso.ne.jp/~volcano/eng/index.html
